This post is in honor of the new James Bond Film. I saw my first one at age 20 and I have never missed a Bond film. And, yes, I daydream about being Bond, but that is something I never discuss with Suzen. She would never understand.

I have no idea how this cocktail got its name. Think about it. James Bond, of Casino Royale fame, did vodka martinis. This beverage is gin and champagne with some flavoring notes.

I am curious.. I suppose I could start reading all the James Bond books. But I’ve seen the movies and I hate doing both book and movie. Too confusing for my fertile imagination.

And this seems a bit overdone for a secret agent. I mean, when I was an agent there was little time for such complex drinks. I had to be ready to instantly pull my gun, aim, and …

Ah, too much imagination. I did volunteer to be an agent. I’m sure I was qualified. I don’t know what happened. They never called back. They did not return my emails. Some jerk on the street just stopped me once and said, “Cease and desist.” How the hell is that going to save the country.

All I can do now is take my solace in gin and champagne. Oh, yes, don’t ignore that Maraschino liqueur. It’s the little things that count. At least that’s what Sean Connery told me.

By the way, you guys at all the agencies, I’m now better than ever for service. I’m much slower and I can’t run. I have no ability for foreign languages. No one would ever suspect me. I’m perfectly incompetent. Perfect cover.

I’m very, very, very good with a crossbow.


Casino Royale

Yield: 1 cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice
  • ¼ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • ½ ounce Maraschino liqueur
  • 1 ounce gin
  • Champagne
  • Garnish: orange or lime twist

Preparation:

Combine the first four ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, cover, and shake until thoroughly chilled. Strain into a chilled champagne glass. Top with champagne. Garnish. Enjoy
